Loy Krathong Festival in Thailand
Celebrate Thailand’s Most Enchanting Festival During ASPA 2025
Coinciding with the dates of the 28th ASPA Annual Conference, Loy Krathong is one of Thailand’s most beautiful and culturally significant festivals. Taking place on the evening of the full moon in the 12th lunar month (this year falling on November 5, 2025), it’s a magical time when rivers and waterways across Thailand light up with floating lanterns — symbolizing renewal, gratitude, and letting go.

The Meaning & Tradition
The word “Loy” means “to float,” while “Krathong” refers to a lotus-shaped vessel traditionally made from banana leaves, adorned with flowers, incense, and candles. As participants release their krathongs into rivers or ponds, they silently offer thanks to the Goddess of Water (Phra Mae Khongkha) and symbolically let go of misfortunes and negative thoughts.
When & Where to Celebrate
Date: November 5, 2025
Time: From sunset onward (after 6:00 PM)
Top Places to Experience Loy Krathong in Bangkok:
- ICONSIAM & Chao Phraya River Pier (close to the ASPA venue – beautiful riverside views, cultural shows, and krathong floating)
- Asiatique The Riverfront – lively night market with cultural performances and river access
- Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn) – traditional and spiritual atmosphere
- Lumphini Park – popular for krathong floating in the city center
How to Join the Celebration
- Make or Buy a Krathong: You’ll find biodegradable krathongs for sale near riverfront areas and temples.
- Join a Cultural Program: Many venues offer traditional Thai dance, music, and firework displays.
- Float Your Krathong: After lighting the candle and incense, gently release it into the water while making a wish or saying a prayer.
- Dress Respectfully: Thai traditional attire is encouraged but not required. Comfortable and respectful dress is ideal.
